Who is invited to participate in this survey? Anyone
who has read all six major novels and considers him/herself a sincere admirer is encouraged to participate. Please share this
website URL (www.janeaustensurvey.org) with all your fellow Janeites!
How did The Jane Austen Survey 2008 come about? The genesis was an announcement at
the 2006 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA). Attendees learned that the
theme of the 2008 session would be "The Legacy of Jane Austen." One JASNA life member in the audience (Jeanne Kiefer)
saw this as an opportunity to combine two passions - survey research and Jane Austen. In November, the program committee
for the 2008 AGM accepted Jeanne's proposal to conduct a survey and present findings at the Chicago meeting in October.
How will the survey be conducted? Most people will take the online version
of the survey. The URL resides on this dedicated website (
www.janeaustensurvey.org) and a link to the site will be publicized on Jane-oriented sites (JASNA web, regional sites, Austen-L, Yahoo/Janeites,
Republic of Pemberley, etc.). The survey launches in mid-January and closes at the end of June, so that results may be tabulated
for the report.
Can I take a paper (rather than online) version of
the survey? Yes. Anyone who wishes to receive a paper version may request one (see Contact Me at left).
How secure is my information? Totally secure. The survey resides on
one of the world's most respected hosting sites. The response database will be managed solely by the survey
administrator (Jeanne Kiefer), a research consultant for the past 15 years. No e-mail addresses will be collected (unless
voluntarily provided by participants), and raw data will be not shared with any organization, including JASNA.
What will be done with the survey results? In early October, Jeanne will
present survey findings in a breakout session at the Chicago JASNA AGM, in a presentation entitled "Anatomy of a Janeite."
Results may also be posted to the JASNA web and/or summarized in JASNA publications. You will have the opportunity to
request an e-mailed results report at the end of the survey.
